Beginner Guitar Sheet Music- Finding the Right Level
69
When you’re a beginner, guitar sheet music aimed specifically at you can seem hard to find. You wander into your local music store and find yourself confronted with books on tapping, outside playing, jazz improvisation and advanced metal playing. All good things, in their place, but their place isn’t on your music stand. At least, not yet.

Instead, you need some music and instructional materials that are geared towards where your playing is now. It’s not that hard to find, once you know what you’re looking for.
Guitar chord songbooks are a good place to start. Real books such as those by Hal Leonard and Alfred are particularly useful, because they condense a wide variety of songs from a style or year into a simple format that’s easy to pick up. They’re a great way for the beginning guitarist to build up a simple repertoire, and a useful way of learning enough of a lot of songs to get by in any situation. Failing that, look for songbooks by your favourite band. More than one guitarist has taught themselves to play by picking up a copy of the Beatles’ Complete Songbook and working through it.
Of course, beginner guitar sheet music isn’t all about strumming along to your favourite songs. There are also a lot of method books out there that aim to build up your skills from scratch, starting with simple things such as how you hold a plectrum and building up to strumming chord progressions, picking out single note lines, and starting to improvise.
One good option is Step One’s Guitar for Beginners. Covering fundamental topics such as scales, chords and basic techniques like fingerpicking and flatpicking, it aims to give you an essential platform of guitar playing skills on which you can then build. Alternatives to this include Eric Roache’s Acoustic Guitar Bible, Guthrie Govan’s Creative Guitar Volume One, and the Alfred Beginning guitar series. All are good, but possibly Guitar for Beginners aims to give the most basic and complete grounding for beginners.
Hal Leonard have taken a fairly complete approach to learning to play with their Beginning Guitar Superbook. Combining five books in one omnibus edition, it covers the ground touched on by their guitar method book volume one, as well as others on subjects such as chords and easy pop melodies. Those wanting to start playing jazz guitar should consider checking out Alfred’s Beginning Jazz guitar, while those looking to start out playing Jazz, Blues or Acoustic will find beginning titles for them in Alfred’s range too, all crammed full of helpful advice and linking seamlessly with their intermediate and advanced ranges.
So you see, things aren’t quite as bad as you might have feared. While there are a lot of more advanced books on the marked, there is also a lot of beginner guitar sheet music out there, if you know where to look.
